You have this nagging cough that won’t go away and is keeping you up all night. You want to do something about it, but don’t think it is worthy of a doctor’s visit. These nagging coughs are usually viral and have no cure, they just take time to run their course. If the cough is bad enough to affect your sleep then you can try one of two options. If the cough is dry in nature, meaning nothing is coming up, then simply try some cough suppressant (syrups, cough drops, etc.). You can add-on some Benadryl as well, this helps with both sleep and decreasing that stuffiness at night to help you breathe. If your cough is productive (meaning you are coughing something up), then take a medication that will break up that gunk. A good medication is Mucinex. When taken with a full glass of water, this medication can breakup the mucous inside and make it easier to cough up. This is an easy fix to something I see way too often in the doctor’s office. If your cough is productive and lasts more than 7 days or you are also running a fever, you should then consider going to a primary care doctor for antibiotic treatment.
Oh yeah, and STOP SMOKING.
